Morganton to Asheville is about an hour away. If you didn’t know Asheville has the most breweries per capita, it all started back in 1994 when Highland Brewing Company emerged as the city’s first legal brewery since Prohibition. But let’s get back to focusing on breweries in Morganton NC.

1. Fonta Flora Brewery
Established in 2013, that specializes in local farmhouse-style ales and lagers utilizing agriculture from local farms. They have both indoor and outdoor seating located in downtown Morganton. They are located in a historic flatiron “pub” with the original hardwood flooring, and the natural brick is exposed.

Fonta Flora’s beers include more than 14 draught beer lines, including two nitro offerings that focus on using local ingredients. They also offer house-made kombucha, wine, and a beer and wine bottle menu.
You’ll find many beers, including several double IPA, pale ales, stouts, porter, Appalachian wild ale, lagers, India pale ale, hazy pale ale, and so much more! One of the most popular beers at Fonta Flora is their Hop Beard IPA.
They focus on seasonal flora and bringing English tradition and Belgian inspiration to North Carolina beer. If you are looking for a non-alcoholic option, try their different sparkling water options, like ginger and grapefruit.

For food, they do have a select offering of local snacks available. They also have a rotation of food trucks; check their website for details.
For the past seven years, they have hosted the annual State of Origin Craft Brew Fest, which includes 25+ breweries, wineries, distilleries, cideries, and kombucha makers from all over the United States.
They have used this as a benefit for Foothills Conservancy of NC, “Foothills Conservancy of North Carolina is a nationally accredited regional land trust that protects the fabric and character of Western North Carolina’s landscape forever and for the benefit of all.” Come for a great time, and enjoy some local beers, live music, and food vendors.

Other Locations for Fonta Flora Brewery
In addition, Fonta Flora Brewery also has a second location in the small town of Nebo, NC called Fonta Flora – Whippoorwill Farm. This is a great location to stop off at after a hike near Linville Gorge Wilderness or if you are near Lake James State Park.
They are located on 9 acres of pasture lands. Eventually, they would like to transform this location into a working and educational farm.
They do have a tasting room off the main barn and production area. Sit and enjoy the amazing views of the pastures and Shortoff Mountain.
You will find draught beer and some packaged products here for you to take home. Leashed dogs are allowed. Add this to your list if you want to find some beautiful places to enjoy your beers.

2. Sidetracked Brewery
Sidetracked Brewery is a nano brewery located in downtown Morganton. They started offering their beer on tap in 2018. Some might be asking, what is a nano brewery? It’s a brewery or brewpub that produces less than 15,000 barrels of beer per year.
Joseph Ackerman is the owner today after the original owners offered to sell him the business in the spring of 2018. He focuses on craft brewing and really focuses on community and bringing people together.
Joseph loves to experiment with new techniques and use more ancient methods to create unique, fun, and even quirky styles. Sidetracked Brewery is kid-friendly and pet-friendly. They offer free popcorn, arcade games, and events such as cornhole tournaments, trivia nights, and even monthly pairings.

3. Hillman Brewery
Hillman Brewery opened up another location in Morganton, NC, and has moved into where the former Catawba Brewing was located. They also have locations in Asheville, NC, and Old Fort, NC.

They will renovate the building, but you will find a temporary taproom next door in the former Buff Tire location that is currently open. They have incredible beers; we highly recommend you check them out!
