We live less than an hour away from Winston-Salem, and it’s become one of our favorites to explore. Its undeniable charm captivates us every time.

Winston-Salem is the fifth largest city in North Carolina, located in Forsyth County in the state’s Piedmont Region. The city is a perfect mixing pot of old Southern charm, country vibes, and a bustling metropolis that will keep you intrigued and excited.

Winston-Salem was the result of a merger between two neighboring towns. The town of Salem was originally settled in 1766 by Moravian colonists. The town of Winston, named after a Revolutionary War hero, wasn’t established until the mid-1800s. In 1913, the towns formally merged into the Winston-Salem that we know today.

By the late 1800s, several tobacco companies had begun operating in the area, including RJ Reynolds and Pleasant Hanes, which would later start the clothing company now simply known as Hanes. Both the tobacco and textile industries had a major impact on the growth of Winston-Salem, with each of the above companies still headquartered there to this day.

Winston-Salem is a highly underrated city and has become more of a vacation destination in the past handful of years. It has become a foodie hub; there are tons of museums, and you can find amazing art throughout the city. This is truly a place you don’t want to skip.
