Murphy’s history can be dated back to the time of the Cherokee Indians, but it officially became a town in the mid-1800s when an important train line called “The Murphy Branch” of the Western North Carolina Railroad opened. 1. Murphy River Walk

The Murphy River Walk is a popular 3.4-mile loop right near downtown Murphy, next to the Hiwassee River. This is a great recreational trail that is mostly paved or gravel. The path takes a little over an hour to complete and is a perfect way to spend an afternoon.

2. Valley River Arts

Address: 12 Peachtree St, Murphy, NC 28906

Valley River Arts is a local art studio located in downtown Murphy. The art studio was created to support and showcase local artists and to promote a healthy artistic outlet for kids and the community. At the studio, there are dozens of pieces of art for sale. Guests can explore things from paintings and sculptures to photographs, fiber arts, pottery, and more.

3. Cherokee Historical Museum

The Cherokee Historical Museum was founded in 1977 to preserve and display the history of the Cherokee people that once roamed this land. Their most popular exhibit is the Trail of Tears Interpretation Center in the downstairs of the museum. A section of the Trail of Tears runs very close to Murphy, NC.

4. Piney Knob Trail System

Address: Piney Knob, Reserve Dr, Murphy, NC 28906

The Piney Knob Trail System is a 13+ mile mountain bike trail system with over 700 acres in and around Murphy, NC. There are six marked trails within the system of different lengths and difficulty levels. The drive into the parking area is narrow and mostly gravel.

These trails are called The Gobbler (6.2 miles,) The Grape Smuggler (2 miles,) The Flaming Azalea (1.6 miles,) Rhodo-Coaster (3.75 miles,) Fain Espresso (.75 miles,) The Entrance Trail, a .2 mile trail from the parking lot to the trailheads.

5. Hanging Dog Recreation Area

Address: State Rte 1447, Murphy, NC 28906

Hanging Dog Recreation Area can be found just five miles outside of downtown Murphy and is a perfect spot to spend the day. Hanging Dog Recreation Area has year-round access to Hiwassee Lake and is a popular place to launch a boat, cast a line, or go kayaking.

In this area, there are also many picnic areas, walking trails, and camping opportunities, as this is national forest land. If you are looking to fully immerse yourself in the wilderness surrounding Murphy, this is a beautiful place to be.

6. Two Crows Farm

Two Crows Farm is a sustainable fiber arts farm with alpacas, llamas, friendly dogs, and friendly farmers. Anyone is welcome to the farm to meet the animals and the farmers and visit the shop with items made by local artists with the fibers from the farm. Two Crows Farm is a great trip for families and those with young kids. 

7. Leatherwood Falls

Leatherwood Falls can be found in the backcountry surrounding Murphy. The area is about a 30-minute drive from downtown Murphy and about 20 minutes from downtown Hayesville. Leatherwood Falls is sometimes referred to as Fires Creek Falls because it is located within the Fires Creek Recreation Area.

There is a lovely 0.7-mile loop trail that visitors can take to see Leatherwood Falls. The rest of the area spans about 25 miles and has lots of other hiking trails, picnic areas, and some decent-sized swimming holes. 

8. Marketplace Antiques

Marketplace Antiques is a huge antique store with just about anything you could think of located inside. This is a highly recommended store by the locals and a great place to go if you are looking to pass some time.

Most people can easily spend at least an hour checking out everything there is to offer. You can find antique jewelry, clothing, furniture, paintings, trinkets, relics, and so much more!

9. Panther Top Lookout, Tusquitee Ranger District, Nantahala National Forest

Panther Top Lookout is a 30-foot-tall lookout tower in the Nantahala National Forest. There is a moderate 2.3-mile trail that leads you to the base of the lookout tower. The tower offers beautiful 360-degree views of the forest. 

10. Ye Olde Goat Farm

Address: 702 Hughes Road, Murphy, NC

Ye Olde Goat Farm is a livestock farm that raises full-bred Boer goats and helps owners get started on their journey to raising goats. Visitors are welcome to see the farm, meet the goats, and visit the gift shop, where they have locally made crafts and goat products. 

11. Harrah’s Cherokee Valley River Casino

There are many outdoor adventures to be had at Persimmon Creek Trout Pond and Gem Mine. They have a beautiful lake with rainbow trout that can be caught for dinner and fun gem-mining experiences for the kids. There are no fees or licenses needed; they are totally open to the public. 

15. Shaka Alpaca Farm

19. Old L&N Line Depot & Trestle

The L&N Trail Line was the second train line to provide easy access to Murphy in 1888. The trestle supports still stand in the Hiwassee River by the Depot, and visitors can visit the area, see historical plaques and an old railmaker, and then follow the River Walk to the steel bridge that still stands in the water. It’s a peaceful area, great for a picnic and a walk, and has lots of historical importance.

20. Fields of the Wood

Some call Fields of the Wood a “biblical theme park!” It is 200 acres owned by the Church of God of Prophecy and is known for providing guests with strong religious experiences. The most popular attraction at Fields of the Wood is the 300-foot-wide representation of the Ten Commandments laid out on the mountainside.

This land has been in their family since 1820, and they continue to work the farm and provide people with delicious treats. ✅ The Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Chatuge Dam Trail is a 1.5-mile out-and-back trail that crosses over the Chatuge Dam and the Chatuge Lake. The trail is relatively easy and great for families. It takes a little over an hour to complete.

The Tail of the Dragon is a popular road for both motorcycles and sports cars, found along a stretch of US-129. The road borders the Great Smoky Mountains and the Cherokee National Forest, with no other intersecting roads or stops to get in the way of your travel. If you are a motorcyclist or drive a performance vehicle, this is a road you don’t want to skip.

✅ Murphy Spring Festival (May 4, 2024)

Every year in early spring, downtown Murphy is packed with fun festivities for the whole family. To celebrate the warm spring air, there will be tons of unique vendors, food trucks, kids’ games and activities, a beer garden, and more! The Murphy Spring Festival is a favorite event among Murphy locals. 

✅ July Fourth Fireworks (July 4, 2024)

Every year, the town of Murphy puts on a spectacular firework show to ring in the country’s independence. The fireworks can be seen from Konehete Park in downtown Murphy. Be sure to bring a blanket, some chairs, and some food and drink to be comfortable and watch the show.

Every year, as part of a “Very Murphy Christmas,” the shops come together in downtown Murphy to create a fun and festive way to get into the holiday spirit. Between November 22 and December 18, there will be themed events like the Light Up Murphy Contest, scavenger hunts, art walks, the Murphy Christmas tree lighting, and the Murphy Christmas Parade.
